What to Wear to your Portrait Session
If you’ve got a family photoshoot lined up for the coming months, it’s best practice to start preparing early. While the candid and unexpected moments are some of the best things about a photography session, effective planning will make sure everything goes smoothly on the day.
If you’re struggling to decide what to wear to your portrait session, you’ve come to the right place. In this blog, I’ll recommend some tips on what to wear for the whole family, based on some of my most popular shoot locations.
Family Photoshoot Tips: What to Wear to Your portrait Session?
General Tips to Follow for Any Family Portrait Session:
- Dress for the season!
If we’re shooting outside, it’s always best that everyone is dressed suitably so they can feel as comfortable as possible.
- Dress everyone in neutrals or tonal shades of the same color to avoid any clashing prints or patterns that will go out of fashion.
- Avoid heavy makeup or bold lip colors – they can often look worse on camera and take away from the family’s natural beauty
- Wear the outfits that make you feel your most confident. Photos last a lifetime, so you’ll want to look back on them with fond memories.
What Should I Wear to a Beach Photoshoot?
Beaches are an incredible place for a photoshoot. While the weather plays a vital role in achieving the best lighting possible, beautiful coastlines bring so much to your images. If you’re due to meet your Laguna Beach family photographer soon, but you’re stuck for ideas, you’ve come to the right place.
Whether you’re catching some couples shots or being photographed as a family, it’s essential to make sure you’re dressed to feel good.
- As a Newport Beach family photographer, I always recommend casual or summery attire for a coastal photoshoot.
- If you want the sun, sand, and sea to complement your outfits, it’s best to opt for neutral colors or warm tones such as pinks, browns, and greens.
- Women look great on beach photoshoots when they wear long, floaty dresses that move beautifully in the sea breeze.
- A nice tailored short and a white shirt are a fail-safe combination for men. If you’re feeling bolder, why not dig out your faithful Hawaiian shirt?
- Dress children playfully in casual beachwear or dress them up in something a little more formal – just make sure they’re relaxed and comfortable.
What Should I Wear to a Field, Park, or Country Photoshoot?
As an Orange County family photographer, I’m used to shooting in a wide variety of locations. Fields, parks, and rural spots are a great way to introduce some greenery into your images and make an excellent backdrop for a bolder outfit choice.
- One of the best things about a family photoshoot is the potential to capture lifelong memories. You shouldn’t feel too restricted to laugh or joke around, so wearing something comfortable and loose-fitting is essential.
- Fields or parks can be a little harder to walk through than the beach, so opt for a comfortable pair of shoes for the whole family. If you want to get a shot in heels or sandals, bring them along and change when you get here.
- Florals and prints work their best alongside a nature-filled backdrop, so don’t be afraid to experiment with your wardrobe choices.
- Khakis are a timeless wardrobe staple, but jeans work just as well!

Urban Photoshoot
Urban portrait photography can be enjoyable and often quite spontaneous – you can never quite plan how your environment will look on the day.
- Urban photoshoots are an excellent opportunity to explore your inner fashionista! In spring and summer, bright fun colors are your best friend. For the milder months, incorporate cooler tones into your outfit and make sure you’re warm enough. Layers and textures work great in an urban area. Remember to avoid busy patterns that might complete with the background. Denim of any color works great in a grungy area with lots of graffiti.
- If you’ve got a particular spot in mind, why not try and coordinate your outfit? High school senior photoshoots often involve posing against colorful walls or impressive buildings, so choose your outfit with those ideas in mind.
- Urban locations are also a popular choice for corporate or branding photography. If this is the case, it’s a good idea to encourage everyone to wear similar neutral colors and dress to suit your company’s dress code.
So, that concludes my guide on what to wear to your portrait session. The critical thing to remember is that you’re here to have fun, make memories and capture images to last a lifetime. If it helps, imagine how you’d want your future self to remember you!
